Bernard Mansheim

Dr. Mansheim earned a B.A. (English Literature) and an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He received his Internal Medicine training at Brown University and completed an Infectious Disease fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

After completing his medical training, he held academic appointments at Harvard (Instructor in Medicine) and at the University of Florida College of Medicine (Assistant Professor of Medicine). Several years later he left academic medicine and started a private medical practice in internal medicine and infectious diseases in Gainesville, Florida, where he remained for ten years. Then he spent twenty years in medical management where he became Chief Medical Officer for a national health insurance company (Coventry Health Care), overseeing the work of fifty medical directors in sixteen health plans across the country. He has lectured extensively over his career on medical ethics, managed health care and a host of other topics. He has published twenty scientific papers and has received awards for medical writing from the Florida Medical Association and the Florida Hospital Association.

He left his medical career in 2008 and has volunteered at a free medical clinic weekly for the past fifteen years. Otherwise, he devotes his time to travel with his wife (Denise), sports (golf, running), and writing. He has written and published several novels and most recently completed a non-fiction book with several collaborators. He has served on several national and local non-profit boards over the duration of his professional career.

He and Denise live in Charleston, South Carolina where they support local performing and visual arts and other non-profit organizations. They have three grown children who reside in New York City and San Francisco.
